Note: A Saxon 8th-century cross can be found in the churchyard, suggesting that Christianity was in Eyam 200 years or more before the Norman Conquest, although the Domesday Book of 1086 strangely doesn't mention a church. Eyam was hit hard by plague in the 17th century.
