Note: Northernmost of the islands in the Muhu archipelago in the Baltic Sea, with an area of 373 square miles. Lies northwest of the Gulf of Riga; the Soela Strait separates Hiiumaa from Saaremaa to the south; the Muhu Strait separates it from the mainland to the East. Settled by Germans and Swedes; owned by the Brothers of the Sword early 13th century; the Teutonic Knights from 1237; ruled by Denmark from 1560; Sweden from 1582; Russia 1721; Estonia 1920; part of the U.S.S.R. 1940-1991. |
