Note: Minaret that is 1 of the earliest Muslim monuments in India; begun late 12th-cen. & finished 14th cen.; ca. 240 ft high & covered with relief sculpture & inscribed verses from the Koran; tapers from 14.32 m to 2.75m; 1st 3 storeys are red sandstone, 4th & 5th are marble & sandstone; it is part of a larger complex including the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque; original purpose is debated.
