Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The reservation spans approximately 22,764 acres in Jackson County, Kansas, the majority of which is divided into individually-owned allotments. Though the Potawatomi peoples, from whom the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation descend, originated in and occupied the Great Lakes region since prior to European contact, tribal members were ultimately forced to migrate west of the Mississippi pursuant to the 1830 Indian Removal Act. Potawatomi tribal members migrated to Missouri in the mid-1830s, Iowa in the 1840s, and finally to Kansas after 1846-1847. A 1846 Treaty first established the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's federally-recognized reservation, then encompassing 576,000 acres. However, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 opened the Prairie Band's tribal lands to white settlement. By 1895, the Dawes Act dated 1887 had forced Prairie Band Potawatomi tribal members into an allotment system. Despite the fact that the Prairie Band has been able tomantain rights to its Kansas reservation by singing a series of treaties since the 1860s, the majority of this reservation land is now owned by non-Indians through Kansas-Nebraska Act-era allotments. |
