Note: The town of Clonmacnoise is located on the River Shannon in County Offaly in Ireland. It was the most important monastic town in Ireland following the foundation there of an abbey St. Ciaran in 545 CE, and by the 9th century was a great center of learning. It was attacked and plundered many times, and finally destroyed by the English in 1552. A national monument has been made of its seven ruined churches, ruined monastery, and two 12th century towers.
