Note: On the edge of Leinthall Moor in the Vale of Wigmore, near the border between Shropshire & Herefordshire; its castle on a bluff above was a key border stronghold; castle long associated with the Mortimer family who also founded an Augustinian abbey here; the battle of Mortimer's Cross took place 3 mi S of here: Anne Mortimer's grandson, Edward Duke of York, defeated the Lancastrians & became King Edward IV; after which Wigmore became royal demesne until Elizabeth I granted it away.
