Note: Refers to the style that developed in the French and Burgundian courts in the mid-14th century and spread widely over western Europe by about 1425. The style is primarily manifested in non-monumental art, including panel paintings, miniatures, illuminated manuscripts, enamels, embroideries, and stained glass. The style is characterized by fluid elegance, curvilinear refinement, a supple, elongated human form, playfulness, and a new interest in secular themes. Some scholars object to use of the term, feeling it is too all-encompassing and therefore meaningless or even derogatory.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de stijl die zich ontwikkelde aan de Franse en Bourgondische hoven in het midden van de 14de eeuw en die zich rond 1425 over heel West-Europa verspreidde. De stijl is vooral zichtbaar in de niet- monumentale kunst, waaronder paneelschilderingen, miniaturen, verluchte handschriften, emaillewerk, borduurwerk en gebrandschilderd glas.De stijl kenmerkt zich door een vloeiende elegantie, verfijnde kromlijnigheid, een soepele, slanke weergave van menselijke onderwerpen, speelsheid en een nieuwe belangstelling voor wereldlijke onderwerpen. |

Il se caractérise par une élégance fluide, un raffinement curviligne, une forme humaine souple et allongée, un esprit ludique et un regain d’intérêt pour les thèmes profanes. Certains spécialistes s’opposent à l’utilisation de ce terme, le jugeant trop général et donc dénué de sens, voire désobligeant. |
