Note: Fantastical creatures having the body of a locust insect and often the face of a devil, tasked with tormenting people rather than crops; particularly as described in the Bible, Revelations. Alternatively, they may be described as having the body of a scorpion or of a horse. Ultimately derived from folkloric descriptions of real plagues of locusts or stinging insects.

| Dutch ..... Fictieve wezens met het lichaam van een sprinkhaan en doorgaans het gezicht van een duivel, die de taak hadden om mensen te kwellen in plaats van gewassen, zoals gewone sprinkhanen doen; hiermee wordt met name verwezen naar de wezens die beschreven worden in de Openbaring van Johannes, in de Bijbel. In andere bronnen hebben ze ook wel het lichaam van een schorpioen of een paard. Uiteindelijk komen deze mythen voort uit folkloristische beschrijvingen van daadwerkelijke plagen van sprinkhanen of andere insecten. |
