Note: Japanese paper produced from the short bast (inner bark) fibers of the species Wikstroemia canescens, native to the mountainous regions of Asia. It is first known from ca. 850 CE. Gampi is a fine, fibrous paper made on a papermaking screen that is covered with a waterproof silk cloth, resulting in a silk-like, woven appearance. While gampi is transparent, smooth, and strong, it has poor dimensional stability, used as tracing paper and as interleaves for beating gold, but not for linings.

| Dutch ..... Japans papier dat is gemaakt van vezels uit de korte bast (binnenste schors) van de soort Wikstroemia canescens, die inheems is in de bergachtige gebieden van Azië. De eerste gevonden vermelding van het papier stamt uit ca. 850 n.Chr. Gampi is een fijn vezelachtig papier dat wordt geproduceerd op een papierbewerkingsraster dat is bedekt met een waterdichte zijdedoek, hetgeen resulteert in het zijdeachtige geweven uiterlijk. Hoewel gampi transparant, glad en sterk is, heeft het een slechte dimensionele stabiliteit. Het wordt gebruikt als calqueerpapier en als tussengeschoten bladen voor goudbeslag, maar niet voor schutbladen. |
