Note: Those who received encomienda grants from the Crown in colonial Latin America. An encomienda stated that the indigenous people must pay tribute in the form of commodities and service to the encomederos in return for protection and religious instruction. The Spanish were invested in this system during the period of the conquest since it permitted them to use large groups of Indians as forced labor.

| Spanish ..... Se refiere a aquellos que la Corona española le hacia entrega de una encomienda que incluía un considerable número de indios. Los indios debían tributarle al encomendero y éste tenía la obligación de protegerlos y evangelizarlos y los indios se supone que no perdían su libertad. Los españoles se interesaron mucho en este sistema durante el periodo de la conquista, ya que esto les permitía utilizar enormes contingentes de indígena como fuerza de trabajo. |
