Note: A member of the series of saturated hydrocarbons with the general chemical formula CnH2n+2, where "n" is a whole number. Though generally nonreactive, they combust readily and many important fuels are alkanes, such as methane and butane, or mixtures of alkanes such as gasoline.

Hoewel alkanen doorgaans niet reactief zijn, komen ze al snel tot verbranding; veel belangrijke brandstoffen zijn een alkaan, bijvoorbeeld methaan en butaan, of benzine en andere alkaanmengsels. |
