Note: Religious tradition formulated in ca. 700s CE Japan, comprising beliefs from Shinto, Shingon Buddhism, and Taoism. Developed by legendary Buddhist monk En no Gyōja (ca. 634-701), also known as En the Ascetic. Particularly focuses on completing challenging physical feats, such as reciting sutras under waterfalls or fasting, as well as seclusion from worldly desires in mountain and forest temples.
