Note: Genre of highly stylized Sanskrit literarature employed in the court epics of India from the early centuries CE. Characterized by an elaborate poetics of figures of speech, among which the metaphor and simile predominate. Other characteristics of the style are hyperbole, the careful use of language to achieve a particular effect, a sometimes ostentatious display of erudition, and an adroit use of varied and complicated meters. Topics are usually traditional subjects and themes derived from early popular epics.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Genre van zeer gestileerde Sanskriet literatuur dat werd gehanteerd in de epische gedichten aan het hof in India vanaf de eerste eeuwen n. Chr. Het genre wordt gekenmerkt door een doorwrochte poëtica van stijlfiguren, met een grote rol voor de metafoor en de vergelijking. Andere kenmerken van de stijl zijn de hyperbool, het goed doordachte taalgebruik om een bepaald effect te bereiken, een soms opzichtig vertoon van eruditie en een behendige toepassing van gevarieerde en complexe metrums. Er worden vaak traditionele thema's en onderwerpen uit oude populaire epische gedichten gebruikt.
