Note: The process of creating designs by fitting together individually shaped pieces of durable material, usually stone or glass, where each piece forms an element in the design or pattern. It is distinguished from mosaic technique, which involves insetting small, uniform fragments of stone or glass (tesserae) to fill in areas or lines in the design, but each tessera does not itself form a pattern or element.

Te onderscheiden van de mozaïektechniek, waarbij kleine stukjes steen of glas (tesserae) van dezelfde vorm worden gebruikt voor gebieden of lijnen in het ontwerp, maar waarbij elke tessera zelf geen deel uitmaakt van het patroon of element hierin is. |
