Note: Refers to the philosophical and theological ideas and doctrines derived from the work of Augustine (354-430), bishop of Hippo, and associated with the Augustinian orders. The intellectual tradition of Augustinianism has been influential since the Middle Ages, when it developed. Augustine offered an optimistic ontology and an escape from skepticism. He also formulated a cosmic theory to account for the plurality of form in the world and to reconcile it with the uniqueness of God's creative act. Augustine also described the ultimate goal of human life as a life of beatitude combined with ethical-political concern. Primacy of faith, knowledge of the soul, divine illumination, and grace are all essential aspects of Augustinianism. Augustine believed that truth resided in man's soul and it was this truth alone that instructs man. This truth, the greatest proof of God's existence, confers joy and happiness. Augustine's speculation on the Trinity and predestination were also highly influential.

Verwijst naar de filosofische en theologische ideeën en doctrines die zijn afgeleid van het werk van de Heilige Augustinus (354-430), bisschop van Hippo, en die worden geassocieerd met de augustijner kloosterorden. De intellectuele traditie van het augustinisme is invloedrijk geweest sinds het in de middeleeuwen tot ontwikkeling kwam. Augustinus bood een optimistische ontologie en een ontsnapping aan het scepticisme. Ook formuleerde hij een kosmische theorie om de veelvormigheid in de wereld te verzoenen met de eenmaligheid van Gods scheppingsdaad. Augustinus beschreef verder het uiteindelijke doel van de mens als een leven van zaligheid gecombineerd met ethisch-politieke verantwoordelijkheid. Het primaat van het geloof, kennis van de ziel, goddelijke verlichting en genade zijn allemaal essentiële aspecten van het augustinisme. Augustinus geloofde dat de waarheid in de menselijke ziel zetelde en dat de mens alleen leerde van die waarheid. Deze waarheid, het grootste bewijs voor het bestaan van God, schenkt vreugde en geluk. Ook Augustinus’ speculaties over de aard van de Drie-eenheid en over predestinatie zijn zeer invloedrijk geweest. |

La tradición intelectual del Augustinianismo ha sido influyente desde la Edad Media, cuando se desarrolló. San Agustín presenta una ontología optimista y un escape del escepticismo. Él también formuló una teoría cósmica para explicar la pluralidad de formas en el mundo y hacerla compatible con la singularidad del acto creativo de Dios. San Agustín también describió el objetivo final de la vida humana como una vida de beatitud combinada con la preocupación ético-política.
