Note: Refers to the system of solar monotheism in ancient Egypt, particularly during the reign of the pharaoh Akhenaton (Amenophis IV) in the 14th century BCE. Aten (or Aton), the Egyptian word for the sun disc, was depicted as a round solar disc with rays that end in hands. Aten was originally an aspect of the sun god Re but had begun to be worshipped in its own right during the reign of Akenaton's two predecessors. Akhenaton believed that Aten was the only deity worth worshipping and he presecuted other deities such as the prominent Amun. Akhenaton was considered the sole intermediary between Aten and the world. An interest in art flourished during this time, and the resulting painting and sculpture is more naturalistic than earlier Egyptian art. Follows of Atenism worshipped the actual sun as a giver of life, beauty, and love through its light and warmth. Atenism was disruptive among the ruling classes and had little impact on the beliefs of the common people; the new religion collapsed shortly after Akhenaton's death and the old gods were reinstated.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar het systeem van zonnemonotheïsme in het oude Egypte, in het bijzonder tijdens de regering van farao Akhenaton (Amenophis IV) in de 14de eeuw v. Chr. Aten (of Aton), de Egyptische naam voor de zonneschijf, werd afgebeeld als een zonnecirkel met stralen die eindigden in handen. Aten was oorspronkelijk een aspect van de zonnegod Ra maar begon onder de beide voorgangers van Akhenaton ook zelfstandig vereerd te worden. Akhenaton meende dat Aten de enige god was die aanbidding verdiende en hij vervolgde andere goden zoals de vooraanstaande Amun. Akhenaton werd beschouwd als de enige bemiddelaar tussen Aten en de wereld. In deze tijd bloeide de belangstelling voor kunst en het resulterende schilder- en beeldhouwwerk is meer naturalistisch dan vroegere Egyptische kunst. Aanhangers van het atenisme aanbaden de echte zon als brenger van leven, schoonheid en liefde door middel van zijn licht en warmte. Het atenisme had een ontwrichtende uitwerking op de heersende klasse maar had weinig gevolgen voor de geloofsovertuiging van gewone mensen; kort na de dood van Akhenaton stortte de nieuwe religie ineen en werden de oude goden in ere hersteld. |
