Note: Refers to embroidery done with distinctive, two-ply, loosely twisted woolen yarns known as "crewel wool." Crewelwork traditionally has a twill foundation, with linen warp and cotton weft; however, pure linen or cotton cloth or another fabric may be used. It may be intended for framing or fashioned into apparel, bed hangings, furniture coverings, or other items. It is characterized by having a more free-hand style than other types of embroidery. The creation of crewelwork particularly flourished in 16th- to 18th-century Europe and the American colonies, with designs inspired by textiles from India and the Middle East.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar borduurwerk dat wordt uitgevoerd met kenmerkende tweedraads, los getwijnde wollen garens die bekendstaan als ‘borduurwol’. Crewelborduurwerk is traditioneel gebaseerd op keperweefsel, met linnen schering en katoenen inslag; er kan echter ook zuiver linnen of katoen of een andere stof worden gebruikt. Het kan bedoeld zijn om te worden ingelijst of te worden verwerkt tot kledingstukken, bedbehangsels, meubelbekleding of andere zaken. Het kenmerkt zich door een lossere stijl dan andere typen boorduurwerk. Het maken van crewelborduurwerk bloeide in het bijzonder in het 16de- tot 18de-eeuwse Europa en zijn Amerikaanse kolonies, met ontwerpen die waren geïnspireerd door textiel uit India en het Midden-Oosten. |
| German ..... Bezeichnet eine Stickerei, die mit den charakteristischen zweisträhnigen, locker gedrehten Wollgarn, auch als Crewel-Wolle bekannt, ausgeführt wird. Crewel-Stickerei wird traditionell auf einem Twill-Untergrund mit Leinen-Kette und Baumwoll-Schuss angefertigt; es können aber auch pure Leinen- oder Baumwollstoffe sowie andere Gewebe verwendet werden. Sie wird zur Verzierung oder Rahmung an Kleidung, Bettbehängen, Möbelabdeckungen und anderen Objekten angebracht. Sie wird charakterisiert durch einen stärkeren “Freihand”-Stil als andere Stickereiarten. Die Herstellung der Crewel-Stickerei florierte besonders im 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert in Europa und den Amerikanischen Kolonien mit Mustern, die von Textilien aus Indien und dem Nahen Osten inspiriert wurden. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a bordados realizados con hilos distintivos de lana de dos trenzas, holgadamente torcidos conocidos como "lana crewel". Los tejidos bordados tradicionalmente tienen un fondo de sarga con urdimbre de lino y trama de algodón; sin embargo pueden usarse telas de lino puro o algodón u otro tejido. Pueden tener el propósito de ser enmarcados o ajustados a un aparejo, colgaduras de cama, fundas de mobiliario u otros elementos. Es característico por tener un estilo más suelto que otros bordados. |
