Note: Images or patterns composed of individually shaped pieces of durable material, usually stone or glass, where each piece forms an element in the design or pattern. It is distinguished from mosaics, which use small fragments of stone or glass (tesserae) to fill in areas or lines in the design, but each tessera does not itself form a pattern or element. Opus sectile originated in Egypt and Asia Minor. It was considered a rarer and more luxurious art than straightforward mosaic. Little survives before Roman times; it was later used in Early Christian and Byzantine churches, and remained popular in Italy, particularly in church floors, throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

| Dutch ..... Beeldende werken, waarbij voorstellingen of patronen zijn gevormd uit stukjes duurzaam materiaal, meestal glas of steen, in verschillende vormen. Te onderscheiden van 'mozaïeken', die bestaan uit stukjes duurzaam materiaal van regelmatige vorm. |

Bild oder Muster, das aus individuell geformten Stücken aus dauerhaftem Material, gewöhnlich Stein oder Glas, zusammengefügt ist, bei dem jedes Stück einen Teil der Darstellung oder des Musters bildet. Es wird vom Mosaik unterschieden, das kleine Bruchstücke aus Stein oder Glas (Tesserae) verwendet, um Flächen oder Linien in der Darstellung aufzufüllen, aber jedes Tessera bildet nicht selbst ein Muster oder Element. Opus sectile entstanden in Ägypten und Kleinasien. Es wurde als eine seltenere und luxuriösere Kunst als das einfachere Mosaik angesehen. Wenig ist aus vorrömischer Zeit erhalten geblieben; später wurde es in frühchristlichen und byzantinischen Kirchen verwendet und blieb in Italien während des Mittelalters und der Renaissance beliebt, besonders bei Fußböden von Kirchen. |
