Note: Any solid semi-inorganic polymers based on siloxanes, obtained by the action of concentrated hydrochloric acid on calcium silicide. Silicones were first discovered by F.S. Kipping in England in 1904, but were not commercially produced as polymers until 1943 by Dow Corning and 1946 by General Electric. They were called silicones because their empirical formula (R2SiO) is similar to that for ketones (R2CO). Silicones can be liquids, gels, and elastomers as well as solid thermoplastic or thermosetting resins. In general, they have excellent heat and chemical resistance and are water repellent. Silicones are used as adhesives, lubricants, protective coatings, release agents, paints, rubbers, coolants, implants, and insulation.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 任何基底為矽氧烷的固狀半無機聚合物，以濃鹽酸在矽化鈣上作用而成。西元1904年矽氧樹脂首度被英格蘭的F.S.濟平（F.S. Kipping）發現，不過直到1943年和1946年，才分別由道康寧公司（Dow Corning）及通用電器公司（General Electric）商業性廣泛製造。之所以稱為矽氧樹脂，是因為其實驗公式（R2SiO）與酮類（R2CO）相似。矽氧樹脂可呈液態、膠狀、彈性體，也可以是固狀熱塑性塑膠或熱固性樹脂。一般來說，具有極佳抗熱且抗化學物質之特性，並能防水，用做為膠黏劑、潤滑劑、保護塗層、脫模劑、油漆、橡膠、冷卻劑、埋植劑及絕緣體等的材料。 |
| Dutch ..... Vaste semi-anorganische polymeren op basis van siloxanen, die worden verkregen door de werking van geconcentreerd zoutzuur op calciumsilicide. Siliconen werden voor het eerst in 1904 ontdekt door F.S. Kipping in Engeland, maar werden pas in 1943 door Dow Corning en in 1946 door General Electric commercieel geproduceerd als polymeren. Ze werden siliconen genoemd omdat hun formule (R2SiO) lijkt op die van ketonen (R2CO). Siliconen kunnen vloeistoffen, gels of elastomeren zijn, maar ook vaste thermoplast of thermoharder. In het algemeen hebben ze een uitstekende thermische en chemische bestendigheid en zijn ze waterafstotend. Siliconen worden gebruikt als lijm, smeermiddel, beschermlaag, losmiddel, verf, rubber, koelmiddel, implantaat en isolatie. |
