Note: Self-sustaining frontier or outpost settlements created by a body of persons sent out by a religious organization to evangelize abroad, and often to aid in the administering of colonial wilderness enterprises. They are sometimes established under the protection of a government, as with the Spanish settlements of America. Missions typically include buildings for housing the people and activities of the group, including a church.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Wordt gebruikt voor zichzelf onderhoudende grensnederzettingen of buitenposten, die gesticht zijn om te helpen bij het beheer van koloniale ondernemingen in de wildernis, zoals die bijvoorbeeld zijn gesticht door het Spaanse bewind in Amerika. 
German ..... Selbstversorgende Grenz- oder Vorpostensiedlung, von einer Gruppe gegründet, die von einer religiösen Organisation ausgesandt wurde, um im Ausland zu missionieren. Oftmals unterstützte sie die Verwaltung kolonialistischer Unternehmungen. Gelegentlich stand sie unter dem Schutz einer Regierung, wie bei der spanischen Besiedlung Amerikas. Eine Missionssiedlung umfasst gewöhnlich Wohnhäuser und Häuser für Gruppenaktivitäten, einschließlich einer Kirche.
