Note: Paintings on a very small scale. The term is often applied specifically to small scenes in illuminated manuscripts or to portraits on vellum or ivory that were popular in Europe and America from the Renaissance into the 19th century. For paintings in manuscripts, the term "illuminations" may also be appropriate.

Additional Notes:

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar zeer kleine schilderingen. De term wordt vaak specifiek gebruikt voor kleine taferelen in verluchte manuscripten of voor portretten op perkament of ivoor die populair waren in Europa en Amerika vanaf de Renaissance tot in de 19de eeuw. Op schilderingen in manuscripten kan ook de term 'verluchtingen' van toepassing zijn.

German ..... Gemälde in einem sehr kleinen Maßstab. Der Begriff wird oft spezifisch auf kleine Szenen in illuminierten Handschriften angewandt oder auf Porträts auf Pergament oder Elfenbein, die in Europa und Amerika von der Renaissance bis ins 19. Jahrhundert populär waren. Für Malereien in Handschriften ist auch der Begriff ["Buchmalerei"](300264522) geeignet.

Spanish ..... Úsese para pinturas en una escala muy pequeña, especialmente para retratos en vitela o marfil, popular en Inglaterra y América desde el Renacimiento al siglo XIX. Para pinturas en manuscritos medievales y Renacentistas, use "ilustración".
