Note: Technique developed by John Fenn in the late 1980s, an improved method of ionizing samples for use in mass spectrometry. Electrospray ionization (ESI) discharges a solution of a sample into an electric field that disperses the sample as fine droplets. ESI is especially useful for samples containing macromolecules, prone to fragmenting in other techniques of ionization.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Een techniek die eind jaren '80 door John Fenn werd ontwikkeld als verbeterde methode om monsters te ioniseren zodat ze in de massaspectrometrie gebruikt kunnen worden. In deze techniek wordt een oplossing van het monster aangebracht op een elektrisch veld, waardoor het uiteenvalt in kleine druppels. ESI is met name nuttig voor monsters die macromoleculen bevatten, die bij het gebruik van andere ioniseringstechnieken de neiging hebben om te fragmenteren.
