Note: Species of very large deciduous trees native to northwestern North America; planted elsewhere as an ornamental. In some classifications, a subspecies of Populus balsamifera. Noted as the first tree species for which the genome was sequenced. Used for timber and for extracts from the fragrant buds for use in perfume, medicines, and cosmetics. Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest used the inner bark as food and medicine, the anti-inflammatory, salicin, content making it useful for treating wounds and other purposes. The wood, roots, and bark were used for firewood, canoes, rope making, fish traps, baskets, and structures. The gum-like sap was used as glue and waterproofing.

| Dutch ..... Zeer grote loofbomen die inheems zijn in het noordwesten van Noord-Amerika. Elders plant men ze tegenwoordig als sierbomen. In sommige classificaties een ondersoort van Populus balsamifera. Het is de eerste boom waarvan het genoom volledig is gesequencet. Van de boom maakt men timmerhout, en extracten van de geurige knoppen gebruikt men in parfums, medicijnen en cosmetica. De indianen uit de noordelijke gebieden aan de westkust van Noord-Amerika gebruikten de binnenbast als voedsel en medicijn; de salicoside in de bast is een ontstekingsremmer waarmee men o.a. wonden kan verzorgen. Het hout, de wortels en de schors van de boom gebruikte men als brandhout en om kano's, touw, visfuiken, manden en bouwconstructies te maken. Het gomachtige sap werd als lijm gebruikt en om voorwerpen waterdicht te maken. |
