Note: Species of valuable North American bottomland timber tree of the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains and Mississippi Valley region, growing 24-36 meters in height, with branches rising at narrow angles from a columnar trunk to a round, compact head. It has silver-white, red-tinged bark and bright green, glossy leaves, velvety and whitish beneath, usually 20 cm in length and turning red in autumn. Swamp chestnut oak is often called "cow oak," because the acorns are eaten by cattle, or "basket oak" from local use of the wood strips for basket material. It was formerly considered a variety of Q. prinus ("rock chestnut oak" or simply "chestnut oak"). Q. michauxii is typically more massive than Q. prinus. A quick way to distinguish the two species is by habitat; if the tree grows on a ridge, it is probably Q. prinus; if it grows in wet bottomlands, it is probably Q. michauxii.

| Dutch ..... Waardevolle Noord-Amerikaanse productieboom die voorkomt op de vlaktes aan de Atlantische kust en de kust van de Mexicaanse Golf en op laagliggende stukken land langs de Mississippi. De boom kan 24 tot 36 meter hoog worden en vanuit de zuilvormige stam groeien takken onder een kleine hoek omhoog. De kroon is rond en compact. De schors is zilverwit met een rode tint, en de glanzende, fluweelachtige bladeren zijn heldergroen en witachtig aan de onderkant. Gewoonlijk zijn de bladeren 20 centimeter lang. In de herfst worden ze rood. In het Engels noemt men de boom vaak ���cow oak' (���koeieneik'), omdat de eikels door het vee worden gegeten, of ���basket oak', omdat men lokaal manden maakt van strips van het hout. Voorheen dacht men dat het een variëteit was van Q. prinus, maar Q. michauxii is gewoonlijk massiever dan Q. prinus. Men kan er snel achterkomen tot welke soort een boom behoort door naar de habitat te kijken. Als de boom op een heuvelrug groeit, is het waarschijnlijk Q. prinus. Als de boom op natte, lager gelegen stukken land groeit, is het waarschijnlijk Q. michauxii. |
