Note: With the echidna, Platypoda are the only egg-laying mammals. Family contains one extant genus with one species, and one or more ancient genuses. Semiaquatic, burrowing mammals inhabiting lakes and streams in Tasmania and eastern Australia, having brown fur, a sensitive, pliable bill shaped like that of a duck, webbed feet with venomous spurs in the male, a flattened tail, and laying leathery eggs with young sucking milk from the pores of milk patches.

| Dutch ..... Vogelbekdieren zijn samen met mierenegels de enige zoogdieren die eieren leggen. Deze orde bevat één bestaand genus met één soort en één of meer uitgestorven genera. Vogelbekdieren zijn zoogdieren die op het land en in het water leven en holen uitgraven. Ze komen voor in de meren, rivieren en andere wateren op Tasmanië en in het oosten van Australië. De dieren hebben een bruine vacht, een gevoelige, flexibele snavel die op die van eenden lijkt, poten met zwemvliezen en een platte staart. De mannetjes hebben giftige sporen. De vrouwtjes leggen leerachtige eieren en de jongen drinken melk uit de poriën van de melkvelden. |
