Note: Refers to a period (660-730 CE) during which that the foundations of Islamic society and civilization are considered to have been established; it is named after an aristocratic family of Mecca that ruled the Islamic empire from Syria for over 90 years. The craftsmen were Syrians, Egyptians, and Persians as the Arabs did not have a developed tradition of craftsmanship at this time. For these reasons, the earliest Islamic art and architecture is noticeably eclectic and it is difficult to establish an identifiable Islamic style. Nevertheless, three separate elements are typically found in Umayyad art, often in the same work: the naturalism of Syria where the Hellenistic tradition was still strong; the more decorative Coptic style of Egypt; and the Sassanian style of Persia which combined Hellenistic elements with aspects of the earlier Achaemenid period. Surviving Umayyad art is mostly in the form of architecture and its decoration, supplemented by some textiles, metalwork, ceramics, ivory, and coins.

Chr.) waarin de basis voor de islamitische gemeenschap en beschaving is gelegd, zo wordt algemeen aangenomen; de naam is ontleend aan een familie van aristocraten uit Mekka die 90 jaar lang vanuit Syrië over het islamitisch rijk zou heersen. De ambachtslieden kwamen uit Syrië, Egypte en Perzië, aangezien de Arabieren zelf nog geen ambachtstraditie hadden ontwikkeld. Dat verklaart waarom de vroegste islamitische kunst en architectuur opvallend eclectisch van aard zijn, en er nog moeilijk een herkenbaar islamitische stijl in te herkennen valt. Niettemin bevat de kunst van de Umayyaden wel altijd drie afzonderlijke elementen, vaak binnen hetzelfde werk: het naturalisme van Syrië, waar de Hellenistische traditie nog altijd volop leefde; de meer decoratieve stijl van de Egyptische Kopten; en de Sassanische stijl van Perzië, een combinatie van Hellenistische elementen met aspecten uit de vroegere Achaemenidische periode. Se refiere a un período (660-730 d.C.) durante el que se considera fueron establecidas las bases de la sociedad y civilización islámica; lleva el nombre de una familia aristocrática de Meca que gobernó el imperio islámico de Siria durante más de 90 años. Los artesanos eran sirios, egipcios y persas ya que los árabes no tenía una tradición desarrollada de artesanía en este tiempo. Por estas razones, el arte islámico y la arquitectura más temprana es notoriamente ecléctica y es difícil de establecer un estilo islámico identificable. No obstante tres elementos son típicamente encontrados en el arte Omeya, a menudo en la misma obra: el naturalismo de Siria donde la tradición Helenística todavía era fuerte; el más decorativo estilo cóptico de Egipto; y el estilo Sasánida de Persia que combinó elementos Helenísticos con aspectos del período Aquemédica más temprano.
