Note: Black- or purple-fruited species of shrub. The fruit is not a true berry; botanically it is termed an aggregate fruit, composed of small drupelets. The leaves and young shoots of the blackberry bush produce a dark brown or black dye that is rich in tannins. The roots give orange and greenish tones. The blackberry fruit, when ripe, makes red (no mordant), green (chromium mordant) or purple (aluminum or tin mordants) dyes. The addition of vinegar to the dye bath strengthens the purple tones. The primary colorants in the berries are anthocyanins, such as cyanidin, malvidin, and chrysanthemin.

| Dutch ..... Struik met zwarte of paarse vruchten. De vrucht is geen echte bes. Botanisch wordt het een ���verzamelvrucht' genoemd, een vrucht die bestaat uit allemaal kleine steenvruchtjes. Uit de bladeren en loten van de braam wint men een donkerbruine of zwarte kleurstof die rijk is aan tannines. Uit de wortels kan men een kleurstof extraheren met een oranje of groenige tint. Met rijpe bramen produceert men rode kleurstoffen (zonder bijtmiddel), groene kleurstoffen (met een bijtmiddel met chromium) en paarse kleurstoffen (met een bijtmiddel met aluminium of tin). De primaire kleurstoffen in de bramen zijn anthocyanen, zoals cyanidine, malvidine en chrysanthemine. |
