Note: Monastic order founded in 1529 by Matteo da Bascio (1495-1552) as a reform movement. It is an autonomous branch of the Franciscans and prescribes a very strict rule emphasizing austerity and poverty. In seeking to return to the greater simplicity of early Franciscans and their literal observance of the rule of St. Francis of Assisi, Matteo wore the pointed cowl or hood (capuce) of St. Francis and he introduced aspects of the solitary life of the hermit. Despite opposition from established groups of Franciscans and near-suppression when their vicar-general became a Protestant in 1542, the zeal and preaching of the Capuchins made them powerful during the Counter-Reformation as they appealed to common and country people. In 1619 they officially became an independent order. Matteo and his followers devoted themselves to caring for victims of the plague from the 16th to the 18th century; they are also noted for their missionary and social work.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een kloosterorde die in 1529 door Matteo da Bascio (1495-1552) is gesticht als hervormingsbeweging. De orde is een zelfstandige vertakking van de orde der franciscanen en hanteert een zeer strenge regel met de nadruk op soberheid en armoede. In zijn streven terug te keren naar de grotere eenvoud van de eerste franciscanen en hun letterlijke naleving van de regel van de Heilige Franciscus van Assisi, droeg Matteo de puntkap (capucine) van Franciscus en introduceerde hij aspecten van het solitaire leven van de kluizenaar. Ondanks tegenstand van gevestigde groepen franciscanen en bijna totale onderdrukking nadat hun vicaris-generaal in 1542 protestants was geworden, maakten de geloofsijver en prediking van de kapucijnen hen tot een belangrijke machtsfactor tijdens de Contrareformatie, want zij spraken gewone mensen en de plattelandsbevolking aan. In 1619 werden zij officieel een zelfstandige orde. Matteo en zijn volgelingen wijdden zich van de 16de tot de 18de eeuw aan de zorg voor slachtoffers van de pest; zij staan ook bekend om hun missionair en sociaal werk. |

Es una rama autónoma de los franciscanos y prescribe una regla muy estricta que da énfasis a la austeridad y la pobreza. Buscando volver a la mayor simplicidad de los primeros franciscanos y su observancia literal de la regla de San Francisco de Asís, Matteo llevó la cogulla puntiaguda o capucha (capuce) de San Francisco e introdujo aspectos de la vida solitaria del ermitaño. A pesar de la oposición de los grupos establecidos de franciscanos y cerca de la supresión cuando su vicario-general se volvió un protestante en 1542, el fervor y prédica de los capuchinos los hicieron poderosos durante la Contra-reforma cuando atrajeron a las personas de los pueblos y campos. En 1619 se convirtieron oficialmente en una orden independiente.
