Note: Initially, the term referred to sheets of glass coated with collodion subsequently sensitized and dried. In 1871 Richard Leach Maddox discovered that an emulsion of gelatin containing a sensitive silver salt could be exposed to the action of light in a dry state. This provided a leap forward in photographic media as it simplified the process of taking photographs, avoiding the necessity of plates being prepared immediately before exposure, and processed immediately after.

Additional Notes:
Portuguese ..... Inicialmente, o termo se referia a lâminas de vidro revestidas com colódio posteriormente sensibilizadas e secas. Em 1871, Richard Leach Maddox descobriu que uma emulsão de gelatina contendo um sal de prata sensível poderia ser exposta à ação da luz em estado seco. Isso deu um salto na mídia fotográfica, pois simplificou o processo de tirar fotos, evitando a necessidade de preparar as chapas imediatamente antes da exposição e processá-las imediatamente após.
