Note: Distinctive Christian visual works having the hortus conclusus (enclosed garden) iconographical theme; best known from the late medieval period through the 17th century, often in female monastic settings. They typically took the form of low-relief panels or assemblages, for example with a central sculpture and elaborate wax flowers, embroidery work. They portrayed the Virgin Mary or other sacred figure surrounded by flowers and plants. They developed in the southern Netherlands, but were found in northwestern Germany and elsewhere.

| Dutch ..... Distinctieve christelijke visuele werken met de hortus conclusus (omheinde tuin) als iconografische thema; vooral bekend vanaf de late middeleeuwen tot de 17e eeuw, vaak in vrouwelijke monastieke instellingen. Ze hebben meestal de vorm van een paneel in bas-reliëf of assemblages, bijvoorbeeld met een centrale sculptuur en uitgebreide wassen bloemen, borduurwerk, etc. Ze portretteerde de Maagd Maria of een andere heilige figuur, omringd door bloemen en planten. Dit speciale werk ontwikkelde in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, maar werden ook teruggevonden gevonden in het noordwesten van Duitsland en elders. |
