Methylcellulose is een wit poeder dat opzwelt in water en wordt gebruikt als vervangingsmiddel voor natuurlijke gom in diverse commerciĆ«le toepassingen, als emulgator, verdikkingsmiddel, sterksel, smeermiddel of hulpmiddel voor suspensie. Bij conservering van textiel en papier wordt het gebruikt als hechtmiddel en als kompresmateriaal voor de verwijdering van vlekken.
