Note: Species of tree native to the eastern Mediterranean region and cultivated elsewhere. It is highly drought resistant. The tree reaches about 15 m (50 feet) in height, has glossy evergreen leaves, and produces long leathery pods that contain up to 15 hard brown seeds embedded in a sweet, edible pulp. The ripened pods are food for animals and also ground for a variety of uses by humans. The seeds are ground to produce a gum. The seeds were a standard of weight measurement in the ancient world, from which the concept "carat" is derived. The common names referring to locusts or St. John's bread come from the belief that the so-called "locusts" on which John the Baptist fed in the Biblical story were carob pods, not grasshoppers. There are various other references to the tree in the Bible.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 喬木物種，原生於東地中海地區，栽植於其他地方。該物種抗旱能力極強，可生長至15公尺（50英呎）高，常綠的葉片有光澤，結出狹長的革質豆莢，豆莢中有可食用的甜漿果，嵌在漿果中的棕色硬質種子可多達15個，成熟的豆莢是動物的食物，也可磨碎作為各種不同用途，供人類使用。種子可磨碎製成膠。該物種的種子是古代重量測量單位的標準，也是「克拉」概念的起源。其「蝗蟲」或「聖約翰麵包」的俗名，是來自聖經紀載中施洗約翰所食的「蝗蟲」；此處的「蝗蟲」指的是長角豆，而非真正的蝗蟲。在聖經中也有其他各種提及長角豆的記載。 |
| Dutch ..... Boomsoort die inheems is in het oostelijke Middellandse Zeegebied en die elders wordt gekweekt. Hij is zeer goed bestand tegen de droogte. De boom kan ongeveer 15 meter hoog worden, heeft glanzende groenblijvende bladeren en produceert lange leerachtige peulen die maximaal 15 harde bruine zaden bevatten in een zoete, eetbare pulp. De gerijpte peulen worden gebruikt als diervoeder en vermalen voor verschillende andere toepassingen. De zaden worden vermalen tot een gom. In de Bijbel staan diverse verwijzingen naar de boom. Zo verwijst het synoniem naar de overtuiging dat Johannes de Doper zich in het Bijbelverhaal voedde met deze peulen. |
