Note: Large family containing around 275 genera and around 7,500 species of flowering plants, including herbs, shrubs or trees, and succulents that resemble cacti. Many members are important food sources; others are useful for their waxes and oils and as a source of medicinal drugs; dangerous for their poisonous fruits, leaves, or sap; or attractive for their colorful bracts (leaflike structures located just below flower clusters) or unusual forms. Although species of the family grow throughout the world, except in cold alpine or arctic regions, most of them are found in temperate and tropical regions.

| Dutch ..... Grote familie van ongeveer 275 genera en ongeveer 7500 soorten bloeiende planten, waaronder kruiden, struiken en bomen en vetplanten die op cactussen lijken. Veel soorten zijn belangrijke voedselbronnen en andere zijn nuttig vanwege hun was en oliën en als grondstof voor medicijnen. Weer andere zijn gevaarlijk door hun giftige vruchten, bladeren of sap, of aantrekkelijk door hun kleurrijke bracteeën (bladachtige structuren net onder de bloementrosjes) en hun ongewone vormen. In de hele wereld, behalve in koude alpine of Arctische gebieden, komen soorten uit deze familie voor, maar men vindt ze voornamelijk in gematigde en tropische streken. |
