Note: Writing desks, generally fall-front desks sitting on top of a chest of drawers, having compartments, slots, and cubbyholes above. For secretaries surmounted by a bookcase, use "secretaries-bookcases." The term "secretary" originally referred to a small, portable writing desk, often with drawers, that was placed on top of a table. In modern usage, these small portable desks are generally called "escritoires," and the term "secretaries" refers to larger pieces meant to be placed against a wall. |

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar schrijftafels, meestal met laden onder en een boekenkast boven, en vaak met een klep die als schrijfblad fungeert. De term verwees oorspronkelijk naar een kleine, draagbare schrijftafel, vaak voorzien van laden, die boven op een tafel was geplaatst of zelf op dunne poten stond. In het moderne taalgebruik worden deze kleine draagbare schrijftafels meestal aangeduid als 'escritoires', terwijl de term 'secretaires' verwijst naar grotere meubelstukken die bedoeld zijn om tegen een muur te worden geplaatst. |
