Note: The name applied to a number of Italian marbles, generally containing various hues and patterns of red and brown although other colors such as white and purple are often present. The modern species are coarse and often considered unattractive; the ancient Romans quarried cottanello of superior quality about forty miles from Rome in the Sabine hills, near the town after which the stone is named.

Dutch ..... De aanduiding voor een aantal Italiaanse marmersoorten, die meestal diverse tinten en patronen in rood en bruin hebben, hoewel soms ook andere kleuren zoals wit en paars aanwezig zijn. De moderne soorten zijn grof en worden vaak niet mooi gevonden, maar de oude Romeinen dolven cottanello van zeer hoge kwaliteit op ongeveer 60 kilometer van Rome in de Sabijnse heuvels, in de buurt van de plaats waarnaar het marmer is genoemd. 
Spanish ..... Nombre aplicado a varios mármoles italianos, que contienen en general diferentes tonos y dibujos rojos y marrones, a pesar que otros colores, como blanco y violeta, se encuentran a menudo presentes. Los especímenes modernos son gruesos y considerados a menudo poco atractivos. Los antiguos Romanos extraían el cottanello de calidad superior a unas cuarenta millas de Roma, en los montes Sabinos, cerca de la aldea de la cual la piedra recibe su nombre.
