Among examples are ancient Greek architecture, where the naos was the main sanctuary of a temple; in Byzantine architecture, where the naos was typically the area of a centrally planned church reserved for the liturgy; and in Egyptian architecture and art, where the naos was a shrine housing the god or carried in miniature by the god.

Dutch ..... Meestal gebruikt om te verwijzen naar de belangrijkste inwendige ruimte van een Griekse tempel, met daarin het beeld van een godheid, hoewel het woord soms ook als synoniem van 'cella' wordt gebruikt. 
German ..... Hauptsächlich verwendet, um die innere Hauptkammer eines griechischen Tempels zu bezeichnen, in der sich die Statue der Gottheit befindet, gilt allerdings manchmal als bedeutungsgleich mit "Cella".
