Note: Relatively small images, either painted or sculpted in low relief or in the round, that are donated to a Christian church or pilgrimage site in the hope of or in gratitude to God, the Virgin Mary, or a saint for deliverance from illness or distress. The images may represent saints, other human figures, parts of human figures, or other living or inanimate things. The term comes from the Latin and Greek formulas that are often inscribed on the items, beginning with "ex voto" or its equivalent "hyper euches." May also be used for pre-Christian and pre-Islamic cult and ritual items of similar or identical form from Asia Minor, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and west central Europe. May also be used for similar items developed via more recent traditions in the religions of India, Tibet, China, and Japan. For objects having this purpose but containing no images, use the term "votive offerings."

| Dutch ..... Betrekkelijk kleine beelden, geschilderd of gebeeldhouwd als bas-reliëf of als rondsculptuur, die aan een christelijke kerk of bedevaartsplaats worden geschonken in de hoop op of uit dankbaarheid voor het lenigen van ziekte of smart door God, de Maagd Maria of een heilige. De beelden kunnen heiligen, andere menselijke figuren, delen van menselijke figuren of andere levende of onbezielde zaken voorstellen. De Latijnse en Griekse inscripties die vaak op de beelden voorkomen beginnen met de woorden ‘ex voto’ respectievelijk ‘hyper euches’, vandaar dat votiefbeelden ook wel ‘ex voto’s’ worden genoemd. De term kan ook verwijzen naar prechristelijke en pre-islamitische cultusobjecten en rituele voorwerpen van soortgelijke of identieke vorm uit Klein-Azië, Noord-Afrika, het Middellandse Zeegebied en westelijk Centraal-Europa. Kan ook worden gebruikt voor soortgelijke voorwerpen die via recentere tradities zijn ontwikkeld in de godsdiensten van India, Tibet, China en Japan. Gebruik ‘votiefgeschenken’ voor voorwerpen met dezelfde functie maar zonder beelden. |

Relativ kleines Bild, entweder gemalt oder als Flachrelief geformt oder rund, das einer christlichen Kirche oder Pilgerstätte gestiftet wird in der Hoffnung auf oder aus Dankbarkeit für die Erlösung von Krankheit oder aus einer Notlage durch Gott, die Jungfrau Maria oder einen Heiligen. Die Bilder können Heilige, andere menschliche Figuren, menschliche Körperteile oder andere lebende oder unbelebte Dinge darstellen. Die Bezeichnung leitet sich ab von den lateinischen und griechischen Inschriften, die oft auf den Gegenständen zu finden sind und mit "ex voto" oder seiner Entsprechung "hyper euches" beginnen. Der Begriff kann auch für vorchristliche und vorislamische Kultobjekte und Ritualgegenstände mit ähnlicher oder identischer Form aus Kleinasien, Nordafrika, dem Mittelmeerraum und dem westlichen Mitteleuropa verwendet werden ebenso wie für ähnliche Gegenstände, die durch neuere Traditionen in den Religionen von Indien, Tibet, China und Japan entstanden sind.
