Note: Art that is created for and about large cities and city life, often done by artists who live in the city and sometimes having a distinctive rough style. Examples are graffiti and street performances. The art is often, but not always, displayed in or on public spaces; it may be uncommissioned and illegally created. The term is typically reserved for modern contexts; it typically refers to visual arts, but may be applied to other art forms as well. For art or architectural elements that are sanctioned or commissioned by the authorities and associated with urban design, prefer "municipal art."

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Kunst die is gemaakt voor grote steden en over het stadsleven gaat, vaak uitgevoerd door kunstenaars die in de stad wonen en soms een karakteristieke ruwe stijl hebben. Voorbeelden zijn graffiti en straatperformances. De kunst is vaak, maar niet altijd, te zien op openbare plekken; zij is soms niet in opdracht of op onwettige wijze gemaakt. De term wordt meestal alleen in moderne contexten gebruikt en verwijst meestal naar beeldende kunst, maar kan ook voor andere kunstvormen worden gebruikt. Gebruik 'municipal art' voor kunstwerken of architecturale elementen die gesanctioneerd zijn door of gemaakt zijn in opdracht van de overheid en die verband houden met stadsontwerp.
