Subjects can range from from violence and death and man-made monsters, to aliens from other worlds to madness to nuclear or natural disasters. Over the course of film history, horror has evolved with human history, mirroring current events and current fears. From the late 70s on, certain horror films have evolved into franchises such "Halloween" or "Nightmare on Elm Street," continuing the saga of the popular charcaters.

| Dutch ..... Filmgenre dat poogt schrikreacties en angstgevoelens teweeg te brengen bij de toeschouwer, als emotionele uitlaatklep en als entertainment. De onderwerpen variëren van geweld en dood, door de mens gecreëerde monsters en buitenaardse wezens tot waanzin en kern- of natuurrampen. In de filmgeschiedenis zien we dat het horrorgenre de geschiedenis van de mensheid volgt, omdat actuele gebeurtenissen en angsten worden gebruikt. Sinds eind jaren 70 groeiden bepaalde horrorfilms uit tot complete filmseries - zoals 'Halloween' en 'Nightmare on Elm Street' - waarin de verhalen van de populaire personages verder worden gevolgd. |
