Note: Chinese festival celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is believed to have originated from the customs of warding off epidemics and driving away evil spirits in ancient times, associated with illness since it falls in first month of summer, when epidemics spread quickly. This time of year, when the sun at its strongest at the summer solstice is associated with the Chinese dragon, which traditionally represents masculine energy. Observances include dragon boat races and various folk customs to protect from infectious diseases and other forms of evils, including hanging calamus and mugwort leaves, wearing scented sachets, drinking realgar wine, hanging up pictures of Zhongkui the ghost catcher. Beginning in the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), the festival has included references to the legend of Qu Yuan (340-278 BCE), a poet and a high-ranking official who served the State of Chu in the Warring States Period (475-221 BCE). Despairing of the political situation, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Now in commemoration of him, celebrants organize dragon boat races and make zongzis rice dishes.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 於每年農曆5月5日舉行，與春節除夕、中秋節並稱中國三大傳統節日。相傳起源於古代除瘟辟邪的習俗，由於農曆5月是夏季之首，瘟疫疾病易於流傳，人們為祛除疾疫，發展出插菖蒲艾草、掛香包、喝雄黃酒、懸掛鍾馗像等習俗。此節日於漢代之後與楚國愛國詩人屈原投汨羅江自盡的傳說結合，後人為悼念屈原，也有龍舟競渡、包粽子等各類紀念活動。 |
| Dutch ..... Chinees festival dat wordt gevierd op de vijfde dag van de vijfde maanmaand. Men denkt dat het is voortgekomen uit oude gebruiken voor het voorkomen van epidemieën en het verdrijven van kwade geesten. De associatie met ziekte ligt voor de hand, aangezien het festival valt in de eerste zomermaand, een tijd waarin epidemieën zich snel verspreiden. Deze tijd van het jaar, wanneer de zon met de zonnewende op zijn sterkst is, wordt bovendien geassocieerd met de Chinese draak, die geldt als traditioneel symbool van mannelijke energie. Gebruikelijke activiteiten op deze feestdag zijn onder andere drakenbootraces en verscheidene volksgebruiken die bedoeld zijn als bescherming tegen besmettelijke ziektes en andere kwaden, zoals het ophangen van calamus- en bijvoetbladeren, het dragen van geurzakjes, het drinken van realgarwijn en het ophangen van afbeeldingen van Zhongkui, de spokenvanger. Sinds de Han-dynastie (206 v.Chr.-220 n.Chr.) wordt in de festiviteiten verwezen naar de legende van Qu Yuan (340-278 v.Chr.), een dichter en hoge functionaris in Chu tijdens de Periode van de Strijdende Staten (475-221 v.Chr.).
