Note: Annual 15-day festival in China and Chinese communities around the world that begins with the first day of the first lunar month, which occurs sometime between January 21 and February 20 according to Western calendars, and lasts until the following full moon. The festival originated in ancestor and deity worship rituals in the Shang Dynasty (ca. 16th to 11th century BCE); it was firmly established in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE-8 CE). Activities associated with the festival include cleaning the home, worship of deities and ancestors, family reunions, preparation of special foods, receiving cash in red envelopes, posting poetry, lighting candles, and setting off firecrackers, symbolizing wishes for a happy new year and a fortuitous future.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 中國最隆重盛大的傳統節慶，為闔家團圓的日子。最早源於殷商時期的祭祖拜神活動，於西漢逐漸成熟定型。年節自農曆正月一號開始，通常為期十五天，即農曆的第一個滿月結束，民間俗稱「過年」。年節時，人們會進行大掃除、祭祖拜神、吃年夜飯、領紅包的活動，而貼春聯、點燈、放爆竹等習俗。 |
| Dutch ..... Jaarlijks festival van vijftien dagen dat in China en door Chinese gemeenschappen overal ter wereld gevierd wordt. Het begint op de eerste dag van de eerste maanmaand, die op westerse kalenders ergens tussen 21 januari en 20 februari valt, en duurt tot de eerstvolgende volle maan. Het festival vond zijn oorsprong in rituelen voor de verering van voorouders en goden tijdens de Shang-dynastie (ca. 16e tot 11e eeuw v.Chr.), en werd definitief ingesteld tijdens de Westelijke Han-dynastie (206 v.Chr. tot 8 n.Chr.). Activiteiten die met de feestdagen geassocieerd worden zijn onder andere het huis schoonmaken, de goden en voorouders vereren, familieherenigingen, speciaal eten koken, geld in rode enveloppen ontvangen, poëzie schrijven, kaarsen aansteken en rotjes afsteken, als symbolische wens voor een gelukkig nieuwjaar en een voorspoedige toekomst. |
