Note: Foundations consisting of flat reinforced concrete slabs or mats or of reinforced concrete tubs with walls turned up around the edge of the mat to create a larger volume, either designed to move with the surface of the ground without structural damage, or used when the soil is so soft that even friction piles will not support the building load. In the latter case, the floating foundation is used because it makes the building like a boat in obeying Archimedes' principle: it is buoyed up by the weight of the earth displaced in creating the foundation.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Funderingen bestaande uit platte en versterkte betonnen platen of matten of versterkte betonnen bakken met wanden rondom de mat om een groter volume te creĆ«ren. Bedoeld om met de oppervlakte van de grond te kunnen meebewegen zonder dat dit structurele schade veroorzaakt. Ook gebruikt men ze wanneer de bodem zo zacht is dat zelfs heipalen de constructie niet kunnen dragen. In dat geval gebruikt men deze fundering omdat het gebouw daarmee als een soort boot wordt die voldoet aan de Wet van Archimedes, met een opwaartse kracht die gelijk is aan het gewicht van de verplaatste aarde.
