In een ecologische context verwijst de term naar een proces van bodemdegradatie die veroorzaakt wordt door de overmatige zoutinhoud van de bodem in droge gebieden. De ophoping van zout in ondiepe bodemlagen heeft verschillende oorzaken (zoals het capillair transport van zouten in het grondwater, of het gebruik van kunstmest of overmatige irrigatie), en kan de groei van gewassen verhinderen en uiteindelijk zelfs in verwoestijning resulteren. |
