Note: Generally, the process of separating an object or material from end to end into two or more layers. In the context of leather manufacture, use specifically for the process of dividing a hide or skin horizontally into two or more layers, a practice originating with the introduction of the splitting machine in the mid-19th century, performed either after the hide or skin has been fully or partially limed, or after tanning. The resulting layers are termed "splits."

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... In het algemeen het proces waarbij een object of materiaal van het ene uiteinde tot het andere wordt gescheiden in twee of meer lagen. Binnen de context van de leerfabricage specifiek te gebruiken voor het proces waarbij een huid of vel horizontaal in twee of meer lagen wordt gescheiden, een methode die dateert van de introductie van de splitmachine midden 19e eeuw en die wordt gehanteerd nadat de huid of het vel geheel of gedeeltelijk is gelijmd of na het looien. De resulterende lagen worden 'splits' genoemd. 
Spanish ..... En el contexto de fabricación de cuero, utilizar para el proceso de dividir una piel o la piel horizontalmente en dos o más capas, una práctica que originada con la introducción de la máquina en el siglo XIX, se realizaba después de que la piel haya estado completamente con cal o después de broncear. Las capas que resultan se llaman "fracturas.”
