Note: Name applied by followers of Mahayana Buddhism to the ancient, more orthodox schools of Buddhism predating the rise of Mahayana ideas. Although the name reflects the Mahayanists' evaluation of their own traditions as a superior model, surpassing other schools in its universal benevolence, it is not used by the conservative schools as a proper term referring to the common tradition of Buddhism. Modern upholders of the ancient Hinayana tradition are called Theravadins (followers of the Way of the Elders) and practice Theravada Buddhism.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 在大乘佛教興起之前，大乘佛教信徒對於古老的部派佛教的稱呼。此名稱反映出大乘佛教視自身傳統為主流，以其普世仁慈優於其他宗派，但保守派別並不以「小乘佛教」作為指稱佛教傳統的詞彙。現今支持古代小乘佛教傳統的信徒被稱作「南傳弟子(Theravadins)」(長者之道的跟隨者)並實踐南傳佛教。

| Dutch ..... Naam die de volgelingen van het mahayana-boeddhisme gebruiken voor de oude, meer orthodoxe scholen van boeddhisme die voorafgingen aan de opkomst van mahayana-ideeën. Hoewel in de naam tot uitdrukking komt dat de mahayanisten hun eigen tradities als een superieur model beschouwen, dat andere scholen voorbijstreeft in universele goedheid, wordt deze naam door de conservatieve scholen niet gebruikt als term om te verwijzen naar de algemene traditie van het boeddhisme. Moderne aanhangers van de oude hinayana-traditie worden Theravadins genoemd (volgelingen van de Weg van de Ouden) en beoefenen het Theravada-boeddhisme. |
| Spanish ..... Nombre aplicado por los seguidores del budismo mahayana a los antiguos, las escuelas más ortodoxas del budismo precediendo el ascenso de las ideas de Mahayana. Aunque el nombre refleja la evaluación Mahayanista de sus propias tradiciones como un modelo superior, sobrepasando otras escuelas en su benevolencia universal, no es usado por las escuelas conservadoras como un término apropiado refiriéndose a la tradición común del budismo. Partidarios modernos de la tradición hinayana antigua son llamados Theravadins (seguidores de el camino de los Eders) y la practica del budismo Theravada. |
