Note: A pottery style which takes its name from pottery found at Samarra, the temporary residence of the Abbasid caliphs in the 9th century. Samarra ware was unknown before excavations undertaken between 1911 and 1913. The pottery found at Samarra, however, probably came from nearby Baghdad and examples of this style have been found in Persia, Spain, Egypt and Syria, all places the style later spread to. It is characterized by thin bodies made of very finely levigated sulfur yellow clay and by carefully applied soft tin glazes. A noteworthy technical achievement of Samarra ware is the brilliant gold luster deliberately combined with other metallic tones on both tiles and vessels. Decoration usually consists of single animals or larger designs on the inside of vessels with rings of dashes almost always decorating the exterior. Early examples from the 8th century successfully mimic gold dishes, suggesting that they were the earliest substitutes for forbidden table wares of precious metal. Much Samarra ware imitates the Chinese ceramics that were imported to the area.

| Dutch ..... Aardewerkstijl die zijn naam ontleent aan aardewerk dat is gevonden in Samarra, de tijdelijke residentie van de Abbasidische kaliefen in de 9de eeuw. Samarrawerk werd pas bekend nadat er in 1911 en 1913 opgravingen waren gedaan. Het in Samarra gevonden aardewerk was echter vermoedelijk afkomstig uit Bagdad, dat daar niet ver vandaan ligt; er zijn andere voorbeelden van deze stijl gevonden in Perzië, Spanje, Egypte en Syrië, plaatsen waarheen de stijl zich later heeft verspreid. Samarra wordt gekenmerkt door een dunne romp van uiterst fijn gemalen zwavelgele klei en een zorgvuldig aangebracht zacht tinglazuur. Een opvallend staaltje van technisch kunnen was het heldere goudglazuur dat bewust werd gecombineerd met andere metaaltonen, op zowel tegels als vaatwerk. Het decor bestaat meestal uit één dier of grotere ontwerpen op de binnenzijde van het vaatwerk, terwijl de buitenzijde vrijwel altijd is gedecoreerd met rondlopende rijen streepjes. Vroege voorbeelden uit de 8ste eeuw lijken bedrieglijk veel op gouden schalen, hetgeen erop duidt dat ze de vroegste voorbeelden zijn van imitaties van tafelgerei uit edelmetaal, waarvan het gebruik verboden was. Samarra imiteerde vaak het Chinese keramiek dat in het gebied werd geïmporteerd. |
| Spanish ..... Un estilo de cerámica que toma su nombre de la cerámica encontrada en Samarra, la residencia temporal de los califas abasidas en el siglo IX. La loza de Samarra permaneció desconocida hasta las excavaciones realizadas entre 1911 y 1913. Sin embargo, la cerámica encontrada en Samarra proviene probablemente de las cercanías de Bagdad y ejemplos de este estilo han sido encontrados en Persia, España, Egipto y Siria, lugares donde el estilo se propagó. Se caracteriza por cuerpos delgados realizados con arcilla calcárea de color amarillo sulfuro y la cuidadosa aplicación de tenues glaceados de estaño. Un notable logro técnico de la loza de Samara, es el lustre dorado brillante combinado con otros tonos metálicos, aplicado en azulejos y contenedores. La decoracion consiste normalmente en un animal o amplios diseños en el interior de los contenedores y pequeños anillos que decoran gran parte del exterior. Gran cantidad de loza de Samarra imita la cerámica china que era importada en toda el área. |
