Note: Refers to a type of European, and especially French, ornament in which monkeys dressed in human clothing mimic such activities as drinking, dancing, hunting, and playing musical instruments. The monkeys are often placed in a setting of scrolling foliage or strapwork. Although ornamental monkeys had been depicted since the Middle Ages as a means to parody and mock the baser human activities, the taste for more elegant singerie first developed in the late 17th century in the work of Jean Bérain I and Claude Audran III. Singerie decoration reached its height of popularity in the 18th century (i.e. the work of Christophe Huet) when it became associated with chinoiserie, fading from fashion with the rise of Neoclassicism. It enjoyed another wave of popularity in the 19th-century revival of 18th-century taste. Singerie developed in part as a way of lampooning the excessive fadism for neo-Chinese forms of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie which some artists considered pretentious. Singerie is found on porcelain, faience, and marquetry as well as embroidered and printed on textiles and painted on walls.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指某種歐洲風格的裝飾(特別是法國)，裝飾中的猴子穿著人類服飾，模仿人類飲酒、跳舞、狩獵，以及演奏樂器等活動。這些猴子經常繪於渦卷形葉飾或帶飾裝置上。雖然裝飾性的猴群自從中古世紀即繪製來譏諷或嘲弄卑下的人類活動，但是較為優雅的猴戲圖卻在十七世紀晚期才首先發展出來，在尚‧貝倫一世和克勞德‧歐德瑞三世的作品中皆可得見。猴戲圖的裝飾在十八世紀（例如克里斯多弗‧修依特的作品）最受歡迎，這和當時中國風味的藝術風格產生關連，其圖案複雜且華麗，戲猴圖隨即於新古典主義興起時式微。到了十八、十九世紀，戲猴圖依當時品味再度成為潮流。其再次發展的原因，有一部份是藝術家為了諷刺上流社會和富有的中產階級對於新中國形式的過度趨附，他們認為這樣的舉動相當虛偽。在瓷器、彩陶、鑲嵌的家具裝飾、紡織刺繡與圖案以及牆壁上的繪飾中皆可見到猴戲圖。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een type Europees en met name Frans ornament waarbij apen in mensenkleding worden afgebeeld terwijl ze bijvoorbeeld drinken, dansen, jagen of een muziekinstrument bespelen. De apen worden vaak gesitueerd in een setting van lofwerk of vlechtbandmotieven. Apen werden reeds sinds de Middeleeuwen als decoratie gebruikt voor het parodiëren en bespotten van vulgaire menselijke activiteiten, maar pas aan het eind van de 17de eeuw, met het werk van Jean Bérain I en Claude Audran III, raakte een elegantere vorm van singerie in zwang. Dankzij de associatie met chinoiserie beleefde de singerie-decoratie zijn hoogtepunt in de 18de eeuw (in het werk van Christophe Huet), maar na de opkomst van het neoclassicisme verdween zij langzaam van het toneel. Singerie werd in de 19de eeuw opnieuw populair dankzij de op de 18de eeuw geënte neostijlen. Het ornament ontwikkelde zich als parodievorm op de buitenmatige voorliefde onder de adel en rijke burgerij voor neo-Chinese vormen, die door sommige kunstenaars als pretentieus werd beschouwd. Singerie wordt aangetroffen op porselein, faience en marqueterie, maar ook op geborduurd en bedrukt textiel, en op wandschilderingen. |

Referido a un tipo de ornamento europeo y especialmente francés, en el cual monos vestidos con ropa de humanos simulan actividades como tomar, danzar, cazar y tocar instrumentos musicales. Los monos están frecuentemente situados en un lugar de volutas foliadas o entrelazados. Si bien estos monos ornamentales han sido representados desde la Edad Media como un sentido de parodiar y ridiculizar las actividades humanas básicas, el gusto por más elegantes singeries fueron desarrollados primeramente a fines del siglo XVII en la obra de Jean Bérain I y Claude Audran III. La decoración de la singerie alcanzó su popularidad máxima en el siglo XVIII (p.ej. la obra de Christophe Huet) cuando se llegó a asociar con chinoiserie, desvaneciéndose de la moda con la ascención del Neoclasicismo. Gozó de otra oleada de popularidad en el siglo XIX reviviendo el gusto del siglo XVIII. Las singeries fueron desarrollados en parte como una forma de satirizar el excesivo desteñido de las formas neochinas de la aristocracia y burguesia acaudalada, la cual era considerada pretenciosa por algunos artista. La singerie se encuentra en porcelana, fayenza y marqueteria como también en bordado e impresos en textiles y pinturas sobre murallas. |
