Note: Refers to a tool making industry named for a site at Ertebølle, Denmark and evident in northern Europe from about 9,000 to 3,500 BCE. It is classified as Mesolithic rather than Neolithic because it is characterized by chipped, rather than polished, stone tools, and because the people were primarily hunters and fishers rather than agriculturists. However, the culture was partially contemporaneous with Neolithic industries of central Europe, and it demonstrated Neolithic achievements, including the creation of kitchen middens, pottery, chisel-shaped arrowheads, flat and radial techniques for working flint, and limited agriculture and stock raising.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een vorm van nijverheid die gereedschap voortbracht en die is genoemd naar een archeologische vindplaats in Ertebølle (Denemarken). Deze wordt in Noord-Europa aangetroffen van circa 9000 tot 3500 v. Chr. en veeleer als mesolithisch dan als neolithisch beschouwd vanwege het gebikte in plaats van gepolijste stenen gereedschap en vanwege het feit dat de gebruikers voornamelijk jagers en vissers waren en niet zozeer boeren. De cultuur viel echter gedeeltelijk samen met neolithische nijverheid in Centraal-Europa en vertoonde neolithische ontwikkelingen, zoals het gebruik van composthopen, aardewerk, beitelvormige pijlpunten, vlak- en radiaaltechnieken voor het bewerken van vuursteen, en een zekere mate van landbouw en veeteelt. |
