De stijl, waarvan de naam werd bedacht door kunstcriticus Lucy Lippard, wordt gekenmerkt door een afwijzing van minimalistisch formalisme en een nadruk op experimentele vormen en het gebruik van zachte materialen zoals rubber, vinyl, plastic en polyesterhars.
