Note: Styles, periods, and culture belonging to Colonial North America. Refers to the culture and style of architecture, furniture, and domestic articles created in the area of the current United States during the period when it was colonized by Europeans, primarily during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It may be also be used to refer to the culture and styles that persisted into the early nineteenth century, after the colonies gained independence. The term generally refers specifically to the culture and styles of the British colonies on the East Coast of the United States, generally not including the French or Spanish colonies. The meaning of the term overlaps with "British Colonial," which is typically used to refer to the cultures and styles in British colonies other than those that existed in the area that is now the United States.

Verwijst naar de cultuur en stijl van architectuur, meubels en huishoudelijke artikelen die in het gebied van de huidige Verenigde Staten werden vervaardigd in de periode dat dit land nog door Europeanen werd gekoloniseerd, in hoofdzaak gedurende de 17de en 18de eeuw. De term kan ook verwijzen naar de cultuur en stijlen die zich hebben gehandhaafd tot in de vroege 19de eeuw, toen de Verenigde Staten inmiddels hun onafhankelijke status hadden verworven. Doorgaans verwijst de term in specifieke zin naar de cultuur en stijlen van de Britse koloniën aan de oostkust van de huidige Verenigde Staten en worden de Franse of Spaanse koloniën buiten beschouwing gelaten. Er is sprake van overlapping van de betekenis met die van 'British Colonial', een term die meestal verwijst naar de cultuur en stijlen van Britse koloniën buiten het grondgebied dat nu tot de Verenigde Staten behoort. |
